Sustainability
AFAS Live aims to be climate-neutral and work circularly by 2030. As one of the largest venues in the Dutch music industry, with over 600,000 visitors annually, we have a leading role and the ability to make an impact. We are therefore very aware of the responsibility we must take for future generations of music lovers.
Policy & Factsheet
We have developed a sustainability policy based on five pillars. For each pillar, national and global trends are addressed, and our own efforts are explained. Both our policy and the factsheet are available for viewing. The factsheet provides a clear overview of the five pillars, key figures, and our ambitions.
Return System
At AFAS Live, we use a circular cup system. All cups and bottles are returned to the bar or another collection point through a return system. From there, the recycling process begins. In the video, you can see how this works, from collection and factory processing to flakes, and finally to rPET cups.
Green Key
Green Key is a well-known international certification for sustainable businesses. This label shows that we go above and beyond to minimise the impact of our operations on nature and the environment, exceeding normal legal requirements.
Since 2012, AFAS Live has proudly been certified with the Gold Green Key. To achieve this highest possible category, various eco-friendly measures are assessed. These include water-saving initiatives, environmentally responsible cleaning methods, and sustainable forms of food and beverages, as well as how they're packaged.
Waterless Urinals
AFAS Live is the first concert hall in the country to switch to waterless urinals.
Thanks to a unique system, the urinals no longer need to be flushed. It may sound unhygienic, but it isn’t. “The urinals have a valve that automatically opens when it comes into contact with urine,” explains a spokesperson from urinal supplier Biocompact. “So, there’s no need to flush anymore.”
In addition to a significant water saving—five litres per toilet visit—the lack of flushing has the added benefit of reducing blockages in the urinals. Furthermore, the filter prevents any debris from entering the sewer system. The urinals save approximately 5 million litres of water. This not only promotes sustainability but also reduces cleaning and maintenance costs.
Fans in the Foyer
Especially during the winter, heating our Foyer, which is an impressive 15 metres high, to a comfortable temperature can be quite a challenge. Previously, the Foyer was heated by continuously blowing warm air, which took a significant amount of time and energy to warm the space. Additionally, all the warmth at floor level dissipated as soon as an outside door was opened.
The ‘Big Ass Fans’ provide a solution to this problem. Enormous fans, with a wingspan of over 6 metres, have been installed in the ceiling of our Foyer. These fans push the warm air back down, helping to keep the warm air distributed throughout the Foyer and significantly reducing energy consumption.
LED Lighting
The switch to LED lighting represents a significant reduction in energy consumption, making it better for the environment. The stage lighting in the Black Box, Talent Stage, and Foyer has been completely replaced with LED fixtures. Additionally, areas such as the restrooms, the façade, and the emergency lighting have also been upgraded. The replacement of the remaining non-LED bulbs is on the agenda.
Water-Saving Taps and Showers
All taps in the restrooms are operated using infrared sensors. These sensors prevent water wastage, as the tap automatically shuts off. Additionally, the taps have an automatic flushing feature to prevent the development of legionella and save approximately 4 litres of water per minute.
In addition to the taps, the showers also incorporate water-saving measures, saving 8 litres of water per minute.
