Pulp in AFAS Live: a phenomenal night full of hits

27 May 2024

On Friday, May 24, Britpop band Pulp returned to a Dutch stage for the first time since 2001. We've gathered some reviews for you to relive the night:

"In a tightly orchestrated show, it was an immediate hit from the first second. Cocker, now in his 60s, showed no signs of slowing down, especially with his performance and vocals still in top shape. Over the years, Cocker has evolved into a unique crooner, even producing a French masterpiece with an orchestra. This same orchestra joined Pulp on tour, adding richness to the beautifully arranged '90s songs, giving them even more depth and resonance live." - Soundz

"We were barely ten minutes in when Disco 2000 blasted from the speakers, followed by a rain of confetti. Pulp created a euphoric atmosphere right at the start, something many bands struggle to achieve in a whole show. Only during Weeds and Weeds II did the energy dip slightly, but for the rest of the 90-minute performance, the band maintained an impressively high level." - OOR

"Cocker is a flamboyant yet slightly awkward frontman, a dandy in a velvet '70s suit with his signature black-rimmed glasses. His dancing is more about limb movements, and his humor is dry and quintessentially English. Just before launching into Common People, he quips, 'We’ve played them all, haven’t we?' The crowd revels in the 10-minute rendition of their biggest hit, a song about an upper-class girl trying to experience the life of common folk. As always, it's an anthem for the underdog." - NRC

"Everything seemed to fall into place. When Cocker reached Underwear and Common People, which he claimed were the must-plays of any Pulp show, the crowd was blown away. Many thought it was the end, but then came an encore with Joyriders and Glory Days. It was the perfect end to a phenomenal night filled with hits that still resonate as powerfully as when they were first released." - Parool
